Foam panels hold her level instead of letting her tip nose-down and paddle in a panic. And when she's had enough, the handle on her back lifts her straight out — one hand, one motion, no leaning over the edge.

“She used to swim with her back end sinking and that awful frantic paddling. In this she floats flat and actually looks like she’s enjoying herself.”Rachel M. · Tampa, FL · mom to Poppy, a 19 lb cocker spaniel
A dog jacket either keeps her level or it just gets wet. Here is what makes the difference.
Grab the handle and pull. This is the motion you’ll do at every pool edge, every dock, every boat — one hand, and she comes up level.
Drag the handle upward
The jacket closes around her ribs, so girth is what decides the size. Tap her breed for a starting point, then adjust.
Not for dogs who can’t swim. For dogs who can, and for the hour after they get tired.
Level in the water means she can look around instead of straining to keep her head up. The frantic paddling stops.
Pool edges are high and slippery and a wet dog is heavy. The handle turns a two-person job into one hand.
Most of a dog’s energy in water goes into staying up. Take that away and a ten-minute swim becomes an afternoon.
You stop watching her head every second. That is most of what you are actually buying here.
The details that decide whether it stays on her or ends up in the garage.

Reinforced webbing stitched through both foam panels, not sewn to the outer fabric. It sits over her middle so she comes up level and calm, instead of hanging by her shoulders.

The foam runs along her ribs rather than piling up on her back. That keeps her spine parallel to the surface — which is the difference between swimming and coping.

A dog’s head is a small dark dot on open water. The jacket gives you something to find at fifty metres, and the reflective strips answer a torch at dusk.

Closed-cell foam takes on no water and the shell sheds it. Shake it out, hang it up, and it is dry by the time you have finished with the towels. Nothing to go sour in the boot.
This is safety gear, so we would rather be clear than impressive.
No jacket makes a dog safe alone near water. It buys you time and it buys her energy — it does not replace you standing there.
Two fingers under the belly strap and no more. A loose jacket slides forward over her ears the moment she swims, which is worse than none.
The largest size closes at 81 cm around the chest. Above that it will not fasten, and we would rather tell you now than take your money.
Ten minutes wearing it in the garden before the first swim. A dog who meets the jacket and the water in the same moment will blame the jacket.
Chest girth is the measurement that decides. Weight is a rough guide only — two dogs of the same weight can be shaped completely differently.
| Size | Chest girth | Neck girth | Weight (rough) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 33 – 43 cm | 27 – 32.5 cm | 3 – 5 lb |
| M | 43 – 56 cm | 31 – 41 cm | 5 – 10 lb |
| L | 56 – 69 cm | 38 – 50 cm | 10 – 20 lb |
| XL | 69 – 81 cm | 45 – 59 cm | 20 – 35 lb |
On a boundary? Take the larger size — the straps pull a big one snug, but they cannot make a small one fit.

Measuring a wriggling dog with a tape measure is genuinely hard, and half of people get it wrong the first time. Send us a photo of the jacket on her and we post the right size — free, and you keep the first one for a friend.
And if she simply refuses to wear it, email us within 60 days and we refund you in full. No box, no reason needed, nothing to send back.
Poppy loves the water and is, honestly, a mediocre swimmer.
She goes in like she means it and then about ninety seconds later her back end starts to sink and her chin comes up and the paddling turns frantic. She never actually got into trouble. But I sat on that pool edge every single time with my heart going, doing nothing except watching her head, ready to go in after her. It stopped being a nice afternoon a long time ago.

The first time she swam in it I actually sat back in the chair. I hadn't done that in two years.
She floats flat. That is the whole thing. Her spine stays parallel to the water and her head sits well clear of it without her working for it, so she just… swims. She did laps for twenty minutes and came out less tired than she used to be after five.
And the handle. Our pool has a high edge and a wet spaniel is a lot of dog. I used to lie on my stomach on the tiles and haul her out by the shoulders. Now I stand up, take the handle, and she comes out level and calm. My back has opinions about how long that took me to find.

Stand her up on all four legs. Run a soft tape around the widest part of her chest, just behind her front legs, and pull it snug against the fur rather than loose over it. That number is her chest girth and it is the one that picks the size. If you have no tape, use a piece of string and hold it against a ruler afterwards. Measure twice — most wrong sizes come from a tape that slipped back toward her belly.
The larger one, always. Both straps adjust, so a jacket that starts slightly big pulls in snug; a jacket that starts slightly small has nowhere to go and will press on her ribs when she swims. And if it turns out we were both wrong, send a photo and we post the other size free.
Not past 81 cm around the chest, which is roughly a 35 lb dog. A Labrador, a Golden, a Shepherd or a Husky is too broad as an adult and the buckles will not meet. Their puppies fit for a while, and small and medium breeds fit properly. We would rather say this plainly than have you find out on the pool deck.
Need, no. What it changes is how long she can do it and how hard she is working. A dog spends most of her energy in water just holding her head up; take that away and she swims level, tires far slower, and stops looking frantic in the last few minutes. It also matters most exactly when you are least ready — a boat, a current, a cold lake, or a dog who has simply had enough and is a long way out.
Almost always, if you introduce it on dry land first. Put it on in the garden, leave it for ten minutes, give her dinner in it. A dog who first meets the jacket at the same moment she meets the water will decide the jacket is the problem. Do it the other way round and most dogs stop noticing it by the second wear.
Yes — use the ring at the shoulders, not her collar. The pull spreads across the jacket instead of her throat, which matters on a boat ramp or a slippery dock. It is meant for guiding and holding, not for tying her up and walking away.

Both are fine. Rinse it under a tap afterwards and hang it up — salt left to dry stiffens the webbing over a season and chlorine will fade a bright shell. The foam takes on no water either way, so it will not get heavier or go mouldy.
Collected from customers who have had one for at least a month.
Bought it for the boat. The handle is the part I did not know I needed — getting a wet spaniel back over the gunwale used to be a two-person operation and now it isn’t.
Honest note: I measured wrong the first time and ordered M when she needed L. Sent a photo, they posted the L two days later and told me to keep the M. Did not expect that.
My frenchie is basically a brick with legs and sinks like one. This is the first thing that has let him actually be in the pool with the kids instead of watching from the step.
Took two afternoons of wearing it in the yard before she stopped doing the frozen-statue thing. After that, no notice at all. Worth the patience.
We paddleboard and I can spot her from the far side of the lake now. That alone was the money.
Dries properly, which sounds boring until you have had a wet dog thing sitting in the back of the car for a week. Rinse, hang, done.
